The Barbados Rally Club returned to action with its first event since the running of Sol Rally Barbados in June. Barry held down the fort for The Speed Team as Roger was out of the island and the WR Starlet was still being repaired after the misadventure during Sol Rally Barbados, whereas Rhett is in the process of doing a ground up rebuild of the BMW Rally Car.
The event was held on the smooth Mapp's-Stewart Hill stage running in both directions. This afternoon event formed Rounds 2 & 3 of the Flow SuperSprint Series, the first of which was Flow King of the Hill.
Barry had his hands full with a daylong battle with Dane Skeete for the overall 2WD honours and group honours in SM2. With the downhill running first, Barry took an early lead in the first run but this was later overhauled by a faster run from Dane. This left Barry with all the work to do in the final run if he was to come out on top. He secured the honours, winning 2WD, Front-Wheel Drive and Group SM2, along with finishing 3rd overall with Dane in second 1.98 seconds slower.
The stage was then reversed, with drivers at times driving into the evening sun and the two enjoyed an even closer battle as they were always within a second of each other. Barry emerged as the victor once more, but with the narrow margin of five hundredths of a second separating him from Dane.
After the event, Barry shared his thoughts on how things went:
I was very happy, as I had some clean runs competing with Dane. I preferred the high-speed section downhill and I liked the technical section uphill so both directions offered something different. On the last run of the evening I connected with the chicane, which slowed me down on a run I believe would've been faster.
Overall honours went to Jeffrey Panton who enjoyed a close battle with Rob Swann who kept him honest in both directions.
The next event for the Speed Team is the Rally Club's Winter Rally on November 24th, 2018. This 55km event will be held in St. John and St. Philip and should see the full complement of drivers, with Rhett competing in one of the BimmaCup cars.
